Reward Levels
Thirteen reward levels carefully structured to ensure continued challenge and progression.
Primary schools across the UK are seeing remarkable success with a new initiative that balances challenge and encouragement for every type of reader. Reading Rumble, a reward-based reading program for KS2 pupils, uses thirteen progressive reward levels to ensure that both avid and reluctant readers are supported on their journey.
Unlike traditional reward systems that often favour children who read the most books, Reading Rumble puts adults firmly in charge of progress. Teachers and TA's guide pupils through the levels, ensuring that rewards are earned not through speed or quantity, but through depth of understanding and thoughtful reflection.
This design prevents avid readers from racing ahead without pausing to think critically, while encouraging more hesitant readers to move forward steadily, gaining confidence at their own pace. The result is a reading culture where every child – regardless of starting point – feels both stretched and supported.
“Some of my strongest readers realised they couldn’t just breeze through a stack of books,” explains one Year 6 teacher. “They had to stop, reflect, and really consider what they were reading. At the same time, the children who often avoid reading were able to move up a level with support, and that gave them a huge sense of achievement.”
Parents also play a key role. By overseeing progress at home and celebrating each new level achieved, families become active partners in their child’s reading journey. “It’s not just about collecting cards,” one parent commented. “It’s about seeing my child think more deeply about books – and that makes each new level feel like a real milestone.”
