Reading For Pleasure
Explore how Reading Rumble can help to develop your Reading for Pleasure program.
At its heart, Reading Rumble tackles one of education’s most pressing challenges: how to nurture a genuine love of reading in children. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), reading for pleasure is the single most important indicator of a child’s future academic success – even more so than their family’s socio-economic background. Yet, studies by the National Literacy Trust (2023) show that fewer than half of children aged 8–11 say they enjoy reading.
So how does Reading Rumble make a difference?
By rewarding thoughtful reflection rather than simply the number of pages read, the system helps pupils develop as critical, engaged readers. Children write about what they’ve read in journals, earning their way through 13 exciting reward levels to unlock playable “author cards.” These feature a diverse range of 57 writers – from celebrated poets like Harry Baker to best-selling children’s authors such as A.M. Dassu and Ben Miller – ensuring pupils see reading as both relevant and inspiring.
